Introduction to Shanghai
Shanghai is a metropolitan city enriched with a historic
heritage, with a population of 15 million. It is China’s
largest economic and trade center, with a comprehensive
industrial base, renowned for its unique culture. Shanghai
is well known in the world not only for its prosperous cosmopolitan
feature but also for its rich humanistic resources. It has
attracted an increasing number of tourists from home and
overseas. Shanghai literally means “a port on the
sea”. It is known as the “Oriental Pearl”.
In the past 10 years, Shanghai’s GDP grew over 10%
each year. Shanghai is becoming China’s International,
Economic, Financial and Trade Center.
Shanghai has successfully held many significant international
forums, such as the Conference of the Asia Pacific Economic
Committee (APEC). Shanghai will also host the 2010 World
Exposition.
